Financial, Retirement and Business Succession Planning
It is understandable if you are concerned about growing your retirement savings so you can retire when you want and not run out of money when you do retire. If you are self employed a significant portion of your assets may be tied up in your business or practice, making the challenges and potential opportunities even greater.
I specialize in working with self employed business owners and professionals helping them, so that what they want to happen - happens - no matter what, by integrating their personal financial security plans into their business financial security plans. This is accomplished by managing risk and taking advantage of opportunities.
What is Financial Planning?
Many people think the job of a financial planner is to sell life insurance, business life insurance and investments for meeting specific goals like a secure retirement, a business succession plan or paying estate taxes. We do that, but I believe our most important function is to help clients achieve their lifetime goals.
“Financial Planning is a process that provides a client with impartial assistance in analyzing and organizing personal financial affairs in order to achieve financial and lifestyle goals in a tax effective manner.” Estate Planning is Financial Planning - starting with the end in mind.
We follow the generally accepted financial planning guideline suggested by the Financial Planners Standards Council - influenced by training and experience.
What is Business Succession Planning?
Business succession planning is really an extension of your personal estate planning, but with a focus on the future operations of your business. Planning for retirement, planning for your heirs (in and out of the business), your employees upon your death, and planning for the person who takes over the reins of your business are closely tied together. However, your planning objectives in each of these situations may be different.
A business succession plan determines how your business will be transferred to others and outlines the steps necessary to prepare for the transition. Whether or not you are keeping the family business in the family you should take time to find the best succession plan.

In an effort to continuously improve, we appreciate your feedback.
jpw.ca is designed with you in mind, to help you better understand the comprehensive or integrated financial planning process. You then will be better able to set your priorities and determine how going through a comprehensive or directed planning process could potentially benefit you. (A directed planning process follows the same procedure only focusing on one area - Investment Policy Statement, Family Business Succession, Insurance Review, Retirement Planning or Estate Conservation/Maximization for example).
Although we promote the importance of comprehensive financial planning, we also realize that you may have some priorities that you want to deal with first. The Planning Opportunities page provides an overview of several financial planning objectives / concepts / strategies and a client profile for each.
